 IDUKKI 

idukki_thumbIdukki, one of the 14 districts of Kerala is a beautiful high range district and is known for the dam that helps to generates electricity in Kerala. Idukki derived its name from the Malayalam word Idukku which means narrow gauge. The headquarters of Idukki district is located at Kuyilimala at Painavu. Idukki district is located in the middle part of Kerala and is bound on the East by Madurai District of Tamil Nadu State and West by Ernakulam and Kottayam Districts. Pathanamthitta district lies on its south and Trissur on the northern side. Idukki forms 13% of the total area of the state and ranks first among the districts in respect of area.

Formed on January 26 1972, in the beginning the district headquarters started functioning in Kottayam. Later in June 1976, it was shifted to Painavu in Thodupuzha Taluk. Though no much detail was known about the early existence of Idukki, there are evidences of stone-age civilization here. Stone Age dolmens were discovered in the valleys of Anchanad in Devikulam taluk. The remnants of Old Stone-age Menhir and Tombs were discovered during the archaeological excavation in 1947-48. In early days the region was under the rule of Thekkumkoor Kingdom. According to the history, Vennimala one of the capitals of Thekkumkoor Rajas was in Idukki district. Gradually some portions of Idukki district came under the authority of the Poonjar Raja.

Economy of Idukki
Agriculture is the main resource of the district and almost 50% of the district’s economy depends on agriculture. Tourism is another important sector that supports the economy of Idukki district.

Accessibility in Idukki
Transport is poor in the district when compared to other districts of Kerala. The nearest railway station is Ernakulam, Kottayam and Alwaye. Nedumbassery Airport is the nearest airport. Many private and KSRTC buses are the main source of transportation to the public to the district. Autorickshaws, taxi cars and jeeps are the local transport that helps public to move around.

Idukki district blessed with its scenic beauty is one of the main tourist destinations in Kerala. The district is home to many tourist spots which are must visit.

Idukki:
IdukkiDamIdukki is famous for its arch dam. Built across two hills Kuravan and Kurathi, Idukki Dam is the world’s second and Asia’s first arch dam. This is the main dam from which electricity is generated to the whole state of Kerala. There are two other dams attached to this big dam Kulamavu and Cheruthony. The Idukki Reservoir is formed by these three dams. The Moolamattom underground power station beneath Nadukani hills is another sight for the visitors.

Munnar:
munnarThis center of tea industry is located 1524m above sea level. Situated 55kms from Idukki, Munnar is the headquarters of Tata Tea Company. Munnar, located at the confluence of three mountain streams Kannimalayar, Nallathanni and Kundala is a good summer resort.

Thekkady:
The Periyar wild life sanctuary in Thekkady is famous for wide range of wild animals and is one of the finest sanctuaries in India. This is the main center of attraction for the tourists who make a visit to the district. It is a thick evergreen forest spread over 777sqkm. The Periyar Reserve in Thekkady was declared as a Tiger Reserve in 1978. The Mullaperiyar Dam which is 121years old, built across river Periyar is an amazing tourist attraction in Thekkady.

Mattupetty
mattupettyThis well-known specialized dairy farm is yet another attraction for the tourists. Mattupetty is the center of the Indo-Swiss Project for the livestock development. The Mattupetty Lake and Kundala Dam are added attractions in Mattupetty.

Marayoor:
The place about 40kms from Munnar is rich with the natural growth of sandal wood trees. Remnants of New Stone Age civilization can be seen here.

Kuthumkal Waterfalls:
The water cascade from the hill is a wonderful sight for the thousands of tourists visiting here every year.
