OTTANTHULLAL

The origin of this art form is really interesting to hear. The Ottanthullal is an art form developed and originated by Kunchan Nambiar, a drummer. According to the legend Nambiar, who was playing Mizhavu for a Chakyar Koothu, slept off in between the program. The Chakyar who happened to see this, out of rage not only woke him up, but also humiliated him by passing sarcastic comments on him. Although he silently walked away in embarrassment, he burnt the midnight oil by writing a poem depicting an episode from Mahabharatha in a rhythmic pattern and worked out a special kind of dance to present it.

He was such a skilful person that he also made sure to perform it on the very next evening at the same temple on a different stage. The novelty and witness of this art form drew the entire audience of the Chakyar Koothu presented by the same Chakyar at the same time in different platform. This was the birth of a new art form named by Kunchan Nambiar as "Ottanthullal".

The attire down the waistline and the colorful crown are almost similar to that of Kathakali. But its ornaments were created with a novel idea. Tender leaves of coconut and glass beads are being used to make its ornaments.
