Kerala, state in southwestern India, bordered on the north by Karnātaka state, on the east by Tamil Nādu state, and on the south and west by the Arabian Sea. Kerala covers an area of 38,864 sq km. The state capital is Thiruvananthapuram (also known as Trivandrum). About 60 percent of Kerala's population is Hindu; about 20 percent, Christian; and about 20 percent, Muslim. The official language is Malayalam, a Dravidian language.

Kerala is situtated between 8"18' - 12"48'N (latitude) and 74"52' - 77"24'E (longitude). Though Kerala is situated in the Torrid Zone it enjoys a moderate climate. Area - 38863 sq km. Sea coast - 580 km Boundaries - East: The Sahya Mountain Ranges ; West: The Arabian Sea; North: Karnataka State and South: Cape comerin (Tamil Nadu) There are 44 rivers. Out of which 41 rivers flow to West and 3 flow to East. Kerala is a land of mountains, hills, plains. sea coasts, backwaters, lakes, rivers, streams, paddy fields, tea groves, cardamom groves, coffee groves and rubber plantations etc. Backwaters: Vembanattu Kayal, Ashtamudi Kayal, Velli, Kadimakulam, Anchuthengu.Idava, Nadayara, Paravoor, Kayamkulam and Kodungallur Lake: Sasthamkotta (4sq km). Climate: Based on temperature and rainfall the seasons are divided into four: 1.Cold Weather Season - This season extends from December to February. In this period there is moderate temperature in the day and cold condtions at night. 2. Hot Weather Season - From March to June. 3. South West Monsoon - This season is experienced in June, July, August. Extensive rainfall is its special. Floods may occur. 4. North East Monsson - September, October and November. Rain with Lightning and Thunder is common. Cyclones may occur. The Arab who traded with India used the seasonal winds for calling their ships. They called these winds "MOUSIM" which means season.
