Green Gram Stir Fry (Cherupayar Thoran)

cherupayar-thoranIngredients:-

  • Cherupayar/Green gram/Moong beans – 1 cup
  • Grated coconut – 1/2 cup
  • Garlic – 3-4 cloves (or Garlic Paste)
  • Ginger – a small piece (or Ginger Paste)
  • Shallots/Kunjulli – 6 (or use 1/4 cup chopped onions instead)
  • Green chilies – 2
  • Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
  • Mustard seeds – 1/4 tsp
  • curry leaves – 1 sprigs
  • Salt – to taste

Preparation Method:

  1. Soak Cherupayar/Green gram overnight or at least for 6 hours.
  2. In a heavy bottomed vessel ,Cook this with enough water, by adding salt around 20 minutes, till it is done, (or cook it in pressure cooker if you want, for 2-3 whistles)
  3. Grind crushed garlic and Ginger, green chiles and shallots.
  4. Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds, add curry leaves and crushed mixture.
  5. Fry it for 3-4 minutes and add cooked cherupayar/green gram and turmeric powder.
  6. Add grated coconut ,and saute for 5-8 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  7. Add more salt if needed.  The Curry is Ready
